Within one hours drive from the city of Narvik you can go skiing along the coast on mountains straight up from the shoreline, to mountains that are scattered around on big mountain plateaus or cross through large valleys and over glaciers where you are surrounded by mountainsides with endless amounts of potential lines for skiing.
The same region also harbours two of the very best ski resorts in Scandinavia, one of which that lays in the middle of the city of Narvik itself. Narvik Mountain Lodge is located in the mountainside above the city of Narvik and gives ski in/ski out access to the alpine resort of Narvik. This resort has hosted two alpine world cup competitions, several national championships and numerous other events and offers great in bound skiing on the slopes. The lifts here also gives easy access to world class off piste terrain and you can enjoy everything from nice lines in the trees or big open slopes above the treeline.
With skins and ski touring equipment thesurrounding terrain opens up and you can reach summits close to 1500 meters above the sea, ski steep colouirs, scramble ridge lines or ski all the way down the shoreline. And all of this directly from the doorstep of the lodge. The highest mountain in Narvik is almost 1900 meters high, whereas a typical mountain in Narvik gives somewhere between 1000 to 1400 meters of elevation. Here you can ski everything from steep couloirs, large open slopes, easy angled glaciers and fun lines in the trees and much, much more. To access the mountains you can use car, boat or even train.
As mentioned, Narvik is situated at the end of the Ofotfjorden, close to the border of Sweden and to the open and wild landscape on the mountain plateaus of Swedish Lappland to the east. This gives a unique accessabliity to both coastal range mountains and inland mountains up on the plateaus, which in turn means that one has the opportunity to work with and around the ever changing weather in the arctic.
You do not have to be an extreme skier or super fit athlete to explore the mountains in the Narvik region, but on most tours you will venture into potential avalanche prone terrain and the mountains are placed high up north in the arctic, where the weather might change quickly. But let that not defer you; there are plenty of days with good weather, perfect snow and the closer the days get towards the spring, the longer they get and it is even possible in late season to ski under the midnight sun while you enjoy the breathtaking view towards the surrounding, mountains, islands and fjords.
The closest airport to Narvik is Evenes, which is situated about one hour drive from the city of Narvik (soon to be about 40-45 minutes with a new bridge that is soon to becompleted). On days off or in the evenings there are plenty of experiences to be had; you can go scouting for the northern lights, try ice climbing, dogsledding or visit the wolfes in the Polar Zoo. So come join us on a trip into nature and up on the beautiful and wild mountains in Narvik!
